Touring by Vehicle
Touring
slowly by vehicle on the roads or dikes is a good way to visit either
Cheyenne Bottoms or Quivira National Wildlife Refuge as the critters
are somewhat accustomed to traffic. Both areas have driving tours
with brochures available at entrances. You may also contact the
Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau and request a driving
brochure.
Enhance driving tours
with short walks from your vehicle along the roads and dikes. We
recommend you wear enclosed shoes, a hat, and sunscreen, and use
insect repellent (also sprayed on shoes and socks to avoid chiggers
and ticks). Bring along binoculars and a camera.

Be among the first to drive the newest
Kansas Scenic Byway. Central Kansas will soon be the home of the
Wetlands & Wildlife Scenic Byway. This drive is a perfect way to
enjoy a tour that mixes wetalnds, prairie, and small rural communities.
This Byway is a visual surprise. Flat prairie vistas are certainly
here but there are also lovely, softly rolling sandhills coverd
with grass and gnarled trees. There are large shelterbelts of everygreens
and deciduous trees saluting the prairie and revealing glimpses
of homesteads and farmhouses. Take a drive and discover the quiet
beauty of Central Kansas.
